Life Issues, Stress, Gender and Sexuality

If you have questions about gender and sexuality, especially your own, come to Cath Adams Counselling for gender counselling in the Newcastle area. We offer a range of counselling and therapy services to help you better understand yourself and become better equipped to navigate life's challenges.

Our counsellors understand that gender and sexuality are a deep part of human identity and interaction. Because these areas are so complex and important, many individuals can develop real fears, anxieties, and insecurities surrounding their gender identity and sexuality, as well as around those concepts as they apply to others.

If this is the case for you, you can turn to a competent, kind, and knowledgeable gender therapist to help you deal with your fears and unlock your full potential, no matter your gender identity or sexual orientation.

  • Gender Dysphoria

Transgender or "Trans" is a term used to describe people whose gender identity is different to the gender they were assigned at birth. The number of transgender people in Australia and throughout the world is increasing as more people choose to identify as transgender. People of all ages, ethnicities and religions can identify as transgender. Diversity within this community is expressed by the way that transgender people identify. This can include non-binary, gender-queer, gender-fluid, male, female or androgynous.

The transgender community faces a unique set of challenges, including transphobia, discrimination/vilification, lack of acceptance, harassment, transgender violence, being misgendered, barriers to healthcare and identity controls on legal documents. Transgender people want and need to be recognised, understood and accepted.

At Cath Adams Counselling, our counsellors understand the transgender community and know how to support individuals, friends and families. We have a variety of strategies to support transgender people and maintain a range of professional networks to refer our transgender clients to regarding health needs and advocacy.

  • LGBTIQI+

LGBTIQ communities and gender-diverse people may encounter discrimination, anxiety with disclosure around sexuality, feelings of isolation, mental health issues, substance abuse, eating -disorders, self-harm and increased suicidal ideation. LGBTIQ people can also encounter stress around them meeting the perceived expectations of their own community. Consequently, a variety of choric health conditions are also common among LGBTQ people.

Cath Adams Counselling is proud to have served the LGBTIQ communities for more than 15 years. Over this period, we have seen progress around greater recognition of diversity and support for community members. As a result, our counsellors have developed a great understanding of the very broad range of issues affecting LGBTIQ people and have been at the forefront of developing successful strategies for their progression and support for their families.
